JOHANNESBURG - Two newborn baby boys have been kidnapped from a hospital in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.
Provincial police said the infants were reported missing by their mothers late on Tuesday night.
They were in the premature unit in Dora Nginza Hospital.
Investigations into the incidents are underway.
On Tuesday night, when one of the mothers went to the premature unit to breastfeed her few-days-old infant, she found the incubator empty.
A second woman who went to the unit also found that her two-day-old baby boy was missing.
Police spokesperson Sandra Janse van Rensburg said they have opened two cases of kidnapping.
“The Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit is investigating two cases of kidnapping following the abduction of two newborn boys from the maternity ward at Dora Nginza Hospital on the evening of Tuesday, 20 May 2025.”
Van Rensburg has called on anyone with information that can help find the babies to come forward.
