Meyiwa murder trial: Defence lawyer tells court to expect more adjournment requests

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng listens to testimony in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial on 20 July 2023.

JOHANNESBURG - A defence lawyer in the Senzo Meyiwa trial has told the court to expect more adjournment requests for him as he cross-examines the investigating officer in the case.

This is despite advocate Charles Mnisi being given three months to prepare his case on behalf of one of the men accused of Meyiwa's murder.

The lead investigator, Brigadier Bongani Gininda, returned to the witness stand this week after a lengthy adjournment.

The court allowed the break to give defence Mnisi time to prepare his defence for the first accused in the matter after his lawyer died last week.

Five men are standing trial for the Bafana Bafana captain's murder in October 2014.

Mnisi asked the court for an early adjournment on Tuesday while in the middle of his cross-examination of Gininda.

But that's not all he did.

Mnisi also told the court that this would not be his last request for an early adjournment.

"That is going to happen frequently, I just need to be sincere with the court because I could not have recorded in this little head of mine more than 40,000 pages of information, my head would have burst," said Mnisi.

While Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng questioned Mnisi on why he needed an early break after he told the court he was ready, he allowed his request and did not respond to Mnisi's forewarning.
