JOHANNESBURG - Rand Water said it’s been forced to implement a series of staggered water outages in several provinces from Thursday this week until 21 July.

The utility will be conducting infrastructure maintenance at reservoirs in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the North West and the Free State to improve water supply.

It said that the winter period was the best time to conduct the operation, citing that there was lower demand during this season.

Some areas will be more affected than others, including Pretoria East and Vereeniging, which are set to contend with dry taps for 21 days

The major maintenance operation will affect areas serviced by the Eikenhof, Palmiet, Mapleton and Zwartkoppies pump stations.

Rand Water has warned that areas supplied by the systems will have reduced or no water during the period.

Speaking at a media briefing earlier on Tuesday, Rand Water CEO Sipho Mosai said the operation is expected to improve water supply, reliability and efficiency.

"Preventative maintenance is scheduled and planned ahead, and is preventative because it prevents breakdown."

The utility has advised residents in affected areas to check their social media pages for a breakdown of how and when they will be affected.
