JOHANNESBURG - Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane will on Tuesday be visiting flood-stricken areas in the Eastern Cape province.
The minister will assess the work undertaken to assist flood victims.
Last week, heavy rains and strong winds battered the province, wreaking havoc and devastation to areas in and around Mthatha.
During her three-day visit, Simelane will meet with provincial and municipal leadership to deliberate on the necessary response required, interventions and work that has been done to assist flood victims.
According to recent reports from the provincial government, the death toll has risen to 90, with post-mortems conducted on 80 remains and bodies released to families.
Nearly 3,000 households have been affected, with more than 1,000 homes and buildings destroyed.
Spokesperson for the minister, Tsekiso Machike, said the department would be providing shelter to the displaced.
"During disasters, the Department of Human Settlements can assist victims by providing temporary residential units, building material, temporary emergency accommodation and repairs," said Machike.
