CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town and the provincial government have made available 1,100 operating licences for e-hailing and metered taxi operators.

This follows a recent review by the city recommending an additional 1,106 operating licences be made available to ensure enough services for commuters.

Of these, 840 are new licences for first-time applicants.

The municipality has confirmed the need for 6,600 legal metered taxis and e-hailing operators in the metro.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape Provincial Regulatory Entity has found that 5,494 valid operation licences are currently registered.

Mobility MMC Rob Quintas says operators with expired licences must apply between Wednesday and the end of June, while new applications will open on 1 July 2025.

"We encourage applicants to prepare all required documentation, such as proof of residence or parking, and to adhere to the two-application limit per individual or company. This approach ensures transparency, combats licence resale, and promotes sustainable public transport systems."
