CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) says it remains concerned about the performance of the Western Cape Education Department in the previous financial year.

The concerns come after a report by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) showed the department failed to meet certain national objectives.

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) met to discuss the department's performance in the 2023/2024 financial year on Friday.

ANC member of parliament  Nomi Nkondlo says the Western Cape Department of Education continues to undermine national policy.

Nkondlo joined government and department officials at a SCOPA meeting today to discuss the findings made by the Auditor-General of South Africa during the 2023/24 financial year.

"The department was not compliant on these national objectives some which include the national reading plan for primary schools, lesson plans for home language literacy for grade one to grade three."

Western Cape MEC for Education, David Maynier who also attended the meeting says the National Department of Basic Education is to blame.

"The National Department of Basic Education had failed to provide the sector-wide technical indicators for these performance items, which compromised the audits of provincial education departments."

Maynier says the department is working with the Department of Basic Education and other stakeholders to improve the performance indicators.
