Joburg emergency management services (EMS) is urging motorists and residents to exercise caution as rainy conditions persist across parts of Gauteng.

This comes as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of inclement weather over the weekend, with showers and thundershowers expected in parts of Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The conditions could lead to localised flooding, poor visibility on the roads and swollen river streams.

Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said emergency and disaster management teams remain on high alert.

“From our side as the city of Johannesburg EMS, together with our disaster management teams, with our specialised teams who respond to water emergencies, we remain on high alert.”

Mulaudzi said while no major incidents have been reported so far, residents should remain vigilant.

“We are pleading with our residents to avoid crossing river streams while they conduct their daily activities, monitor young kids to stay away from river streams and drainage channels.”
