JOHANNESBURG - Eastern Cape Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqatha, has warned that police will not tolerate any lawlessness.

This after six suspected criminals were killed in a shootout with officers on Monday night, near Mthatha.

Officers stopped a vehicle suspected of carrying heavily armed men during an operation targeting a group linked to extortion.

Community Safety Department spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa, said: "MEC says it is quite clear that these illegal firearms would have been used for criminal activities, further disrupting the peace of communities. The MEC strongly believes that this action serves a strong message that the mission to eliminate illegal firearms  from the hands of criminals is unwavering."
