Members of Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing police corruption want to add names to the witness list, including President Cyril Ramaphosa.
They say KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi named several people during his three-day testimony at the Madlanga Commission last week, and they should all be offered an opportunity to respond.
The ad hoc committee met on Tuesday to plan its own hearings following the conclusion of Mkhwanazi’s testimony last week.
During his testimony before the Madlanga Commission, Mkhwanazi referred to many individuals, including the ad hoc committee’s own alternate member, Dianne Kohler Barnard.
Fellow MP, Fadiel Adams, from the National Coloured Congress (NCC) was also named by Mkhwanazi, who alleged that the two MPs mishandled classified police information.
President Ramphosa’s name also came up during National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola’s testimony and how he was informed about the disbanding of the political killings task team.
Committee member David Skosana said they should all appear for this reason.
"They are mentioned on several occasions. And the other one who I will ask to be included is President Ramaphosa."
The committee has also added the names of suspended Minister Senzo Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedrick Nkabinde, and former national police commissioner, Khehla Sithole, to the witness list.
