The African Transformation Movement (ATM) is leading the charge to have South Africa renamed to the 'Republic of Azania'.

It argues the name South Africa is a colonial albatross around the neck of citizens, and fails to represent their true identity and heritage.

"This is probably one of the most prominent changes coming from the African Transformation Movement."

"They're saying South Africa needs a new lease on life, and they think this name will do that."

Despite having the support of a number of other parties, Roos says it is unlikely the name change will go ahead.

However, other proposals could be given the green light, she says.

"Such as changing the wording [in the Constitution] from 'everyone' to 'citizens' with the backing of other political parties, such as ActionSA, could see more likelihood in the future."
