JOHANNESBURG - The Eastern Cape government has mobilised multi-disciplinary teams to coordinate relief efforts in flood-ravaged districts, as the death toll hit 103 and thousands remain displaced.

The province said that its response was now being led by the premier’s office, with support from disaster management, human settlements and local municipalities.

Almost a month ago, heavy rains resulted in localised flooding and damage to homes and infrastructure, which saw 4,700 people seeking refuge in schools, halls and community centres.

Officials have also called on the private sector and civil society to help meet the growing needs of the affected families.

The Eastern Cape government said that a multi-disciplinary team was now on the ground in OR Tambo and Amathole to coordinate food, shelter and psychological support for flood survivors.

Officials from several departments are working together to assess damage, deliver aid and restore basic services to communities still reeling from the disaster.

The office of the premier said it was prioritising cut-off villages where residents had been living without clean water, electricity or medical care for weeks.

Authorities have again urged businesses, faith groups and NGOs to contribute resources, warning that the scale of devastation continued to outstrip available government support.
