Stop CoCT welcomes SAPOA court bid challenging municipality's property tariffs

CAPE TOWN - Social justice group Stop City of Cape Town (Stop CoCT) has welcomed a High Court bid by the South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) against the City of Cape Town's property tariffs.

SAPOA made an urgent High Court application this week to have the city's property tariffs set aside.

The association is challenging the city’s cleaning levy and its fixed charges for water and sanitation, which were implemented from the first of July.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has since indicated the city will oppose SAPOA's application.

Stop CoCT chairperson, Sandra Dickson, said there had been widespread complaints related to the city's new tariffs.

"This legal challenge to the City of Cape Town by SAPOA has excellent legal arguments and intends to prove that the city has acted outside the legal framework when these fixed charges were invented."
