Thousands of Johannesburg residents pack up their families and homes for a coastal life in the Western Cape each year.
Sometimes it works out, while other times, you have to put your tail behind your legs and come back.
Reports indicate that 25% of Gauteng residents who moved to the Western Cape are returning.
“What’s with the move back because you know, Cape Town is voted one of the best cities in the world for seven years in a row... It is wonderful for a holiday, but why wouldn’t somebody stay?"

But what is it that brings people back? Traffic? The weather? Or perhaps the people?
“My son moved from Lenasia to Stellenbosch, and the first two to three years were horrible for him. He wanted to come back because rentals are so expensive… nobody is friendly, you’re just on your own… the traffic is madness… I think if he ever has the opportunity to come back, he will.”

“I don’t recommend people who are career-driven to move to Cape Town… their finances are different.”

“Cape Town people are horrible… that’s just being frank. They are very cliquey. Unless you grew up in Cape Town and have familiarity, you will not make friends. I have had to be on my own until I met a person from Johannesburg and we became friends… the people can’t drive.”
