JOHANNESBURG - The late ambassador and former chairperson of the National council of provinces Mniniwa Johannes Mahlangu will be honored with a special category 2 funeral declared by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Ambassador Mahlangu passed away at the age of 72 last Sunday on his way to hospital after a short illness.
He served as the high commissioner of South Africa to the Republic of Kenya, as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the federal republic of Somalia and also as permanent representative to the United Nations office in Nairobi.
The presidency said Mahlangu was instrumental in the drafting of South Africa's democratic constitution and served in the first parliament.
His funeral will take place in Middleburg, Mpumalanga next week.
Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said "the president has also directed that the national flag be half-masted at all flag stations from the morning of Saturday 30th of August on Saturday, until the evening of the funeral on Saturday, 6 September 2025.
