CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) has called for an independent investigation related to the alleged choking of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor Mzubanzi Dambuza during a council meeting this week.

Dambuza has laid a criminal complaint after allegedly being choked by a security officer when he refused to leave the council chambers.

Western Cape police have confirmed an investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made.

ANC caucus spokesperson Judy-Ann Stevens said the party condemns any use of excessive force in council.

Stevens added that elected councillors must be able to engage robustly yet safely in council meetings.

"The Speaker opened the door for disorder by selectively applying the rules to the one side of the chambers by naming opposition councillors, but DA councillors can do as they please."

Stevens said an independent and transparent inquiry must be launched, while the city has indicated the matter is being reviewed.
