EKURHULENI - Ahead of the upcoming local government elections, the African National Congress (ANC) wants to bring back its long-standing practice of having community members play a role in nominating councillor candidates.
The party’s national executive committee is meeting at the Germiston Civic Centre in Ekurhuleni, where it is discussing several matters related to the organisation.
Matters on the agenda also include preparing for the local government elections, at a time when the ANC has seen its support dwindle.
Speaking at a media briefing on Sunday afternoon, ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said they want to bring the organisation closer to the people the party serves.
“We want to now really do that in earnest, making sure it contributes to a reconnection with our communities, giving communities a chance to nominate a candidate through the ANC process,” she said.
