CAPE TOWN - The ad hoc committee investigating allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will meet for the first time on Tuesday to elect its chairperson.

Once it elects a chairperson, the 18-member multi-party committee will then begin the process of investigating Mkhwanazi’s allegations of corruption in the police and the criminal justice system.

The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s members on the committee, meanwhile, said the parliamentary investigation would not be used to score cheap political points.

The ad hoc committee’s meeting on Tuesday morning will kick-start the process to investigate claims of corruption in the police, which also implicate members of Parliament (MPS) and prosecutors in the country’s courts.

The ad hoc committee will investigate the allegations alongside the judicial commission of inquiry, which is yet to start its own investigation.

The committee will elect a chairperson, with parties expected to put forward their own nominations on who should lead the committee before it starts planning its programme.

Committee member, Ian Cameron, said at the weekend that the committee would focus on specific cases and not politics.

"It zooms in on specific issues. What’s nice about it as well is I don’t think it can easily be over-politicised. You’re not going to get crowded with 25 people trying to showboat to get attention."

Once the investigation gets off the ground, the committee is expected to invite Mkhwanazi and suspended minister, Senzo Mchunu, to make submissions.
