JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga has stressed the importance of women’s economic empowerment, saying it is critical to South Africa’s overall development.

Chikunga was speaking during the National Women’s Day commemoration in Tzaneen, Limpopo, on Saturday.

According to the Commission for Gender Equality’s "Women in South Africa 2024" report, nearly 50% of women in the country are economically inactive.

Chikunga said that empowering women financially contributes to the country’s development.

"This Women's Month is themed building resilient economies for all, a powerful declaration that women's economic empowerment is not a side issue, it is a central pillar of our national development and a social transformation. To bring this theme to life, we structured Women's Month 2025 around four weekly focus areas. For week one, we said we are supporting women-led enterprises."
