JOHANNESBURG - Residents occupying a block of apartments in the Germiston CBD are being evicted for allegedly failing to pay rent.
The Red Ants have been removing belongings of the occupants on Tuesday morning from their homes.
The City of Ekurhuleni said it obtained an eviction order in June to remove the people for failure to pay their rental to the metro.
The city claims the occupants were sent notices on time to leave the premises.
Meanwhile, not far from there, emergency services are extinguishing a Home Affairs building that’s on fire in the CBD, where some residents are protesting against the evictions.
Law enforcement authorities have cordoned off some streets due to the protest.
The Home Affairs structural building has been completely destroyed by the blaze.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni's disaster management, protesters threw a petrol bomb onto the building, causing it to explode.
No casualties have been reported, and fire services are still working to extinguish the smoke.
