JOHANNESBURG - City of Ekurhuleni officials have emphasised that the municipality would only allow applicants who meet the threshold of R14,000 to rent units in Pharoe Park, where hundreds of tenants were evicted from a block of flats.
The City of Ekurhuleni carried out the evictions earlier this week.
It said tenants failed to pay rent, prompting legal action and removals enforced by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Human Settlements MMC Kgopelo Hollo insisted that anyone who occupied the units must pay rent.
"So anyone who occupies here has to pay rental every month to the city through EHC. That's the nature of where we are. So, here, we are only going to allow those who qualify, who have an earning, and the threshold of which I have explained."
