Soweto residents angered, frustrated in wake of deadly Maponya Mall attack

Residents in Soweto say it cannot be business as usual after an e-hailing driver was shot and killed and two vehicles were set on fire at Maponya Mall on Wednesday night.

JOHANNESBURG - Residents in Soweto say it cannot be business as usual after an e-hailing driver was shot and killed and two vehicles were set on fire at Maponya Mall on Wednesday night. 
 
Another driver parked near the mall entrance was shot but managed to flee but his car was torched.
 
An onlooker was also injured after being hit by a stray bullet.

People gathered outside the mall on Thursday morning said that the long-running battles compromised the safety of residents.
  
Community members are calling for employees working at the mall not to go to work on Thursday, saying that things can't continue as normal under such circumstances.
 
Many have expressed anger and frustration over what they believe was an attack sparked by the taxi industry.
 
Community leader, Keabetswe Malebo: "We cannot be dictated to by an association of this kind or being pulled by this demonic and injustice of criminality in our community. We are one of the people who were at the forefront of guarding Maponya Mall to protect the economy of Soweto, to protect the economy of Soweto."
 
Police have now closed off the area with tape and are monitoring the situation.
