CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku says if taxi violence persists in Cape Town, taxi associations may face deregistration or have their operating permits suspended.

This follows a flare-up of taxi-related shootings in Philippi, Khayelitsha and Macassar this week, in which five people were killed and nine were wounded.

The attacks are linked to a feud between CATA and CODETA over a taxi route from Mfuleni and Khayelitsha to Somerset West.

The provincial mobility department has approached the courts to interdict the organisations.

MEC Isaac Sileku said government would not tolerate the use of violence to settle disputes.

"For millions of workers, students, women, and children, it is not just transport, it is a lifeline. That lifeline cannot be allowed to become a death trap. The Western Cape government is resolute; the safety of communities is non-negotiable."

Sileku said the door for peace was not closed.

"At the taxi peace summit, leaders pledged to prioritised safety and stability in the taxi industry. It is unfortunate that some have betrayed that commitment, but those who honour it will find government ready to work with them for lasting peace and transformation."
