CoJ spends R82m to restore Lilian Ngoyi Street, remaining money to give precinct face lift

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg has so far spent R82 million on rebuilding Lilian Ngoyi Street in the inner city.

More than two years after it was damaged by an underground gas explosion, repairs to the road have been completed.

However, despite the repairs being finished, the street will only be reopened to traffic later this month.

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero conducted a site visit to the formerly busy road on Monday.

The recently reconstructed Lilian Ngoyi Street has been surfaced with brick paving, replacing the traditional tar.

Pavements and sidewalks still need to be installed, while construction containers also have to be removed.

Morero said that, to date, only R82 million of the R192 million allocated budget has been spent.

“A total of R82 million has been spent on work package one, which refers to the scene of the explosion. R110 Million has been secured for work package two.”

The remainder of the budget will go towards enhancing the visual appeal of Lilian Ngoyi Street and modernising the precinct.
