ANC WC on Vista High School disruptions: WCED must 'stabilise teaching environment'

CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) caucus in the Western Cape said it’s deeply concerned with the disruptions that occurred at the Vista High School in Bo Kaap on Tuesday.
Learners are reportedly unhappy about a high teacher turnover rate and the absence of a clear plan to restore and improve academic performance.
The ANC’s Khaled Sayed said it’s worrying that learners needed to disrupt classes to to air their grievances.
“We call on the WCED [Western Cape Education Department] to intervene decisively at Vista High School by stabilising the teaching environment, developing a recovery plan for learners, and ensuring accountability in restoring quality education.”

Meanwhile, the WCED has confirmed a meeting with the school management and parents is set to take place today (Wednesday) to address some of the issues.
The department’s Bronagh Hammond explained: “The WCED is addressing the issue with the school management and communication has been sent to parents regarding the learners’ behaviour. A meeting has been scheduled with parents.”
A newly installed fence was left damaged, added Hammond.
“This type of behaviour cannot be tolerated and will be addressed in terms of the school's code of conduct learners will be identified and disciplinary action will be taken,” said Hammond.
