CAPE TOWN - A local NGO is launching their 100th school library in Kalksteenfontein on Thursday.
The Bookery has chosen Montana Primary School as the location for this milestone moment.
The organisation’s main purpose is to help improve literacy skills in children who live in under-resourced communities.
It said it believes access to a library should not be a luxury but rather a staple in public schools.
The organisation’s managing director, Shelley De Wet, said they carefully curate their collection of books.
“At The Bookery, we believe that every child deserves to experience the joy and the power of reading. We’re hoping to inspire a generation of readers. We’d love the school community to embrace the library as a tool to support and improve their literacy.”
De Wet said creating reading discussions between family members at home is also important.
“We also create a beautiful space somewhere that children feel welcome and safe, where they can be inspired even to lose themselves in a book but also possibly find themselves, become activists, writers, leaders, scientists. One of the key things that we focus on is reading for enjoyment as a step towards reading for learning”.
