Parly committee probing police corruption to announce way forward be end of week

JOHANNESBURG - Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating police corruption said it will announce a way forward by the end of the week as pressure builds to hear from KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

The committee is tasked with investigating allegations of political interference in the criminal justice system and wants Mkhwanazi to be its first witness to testify.

But his testimony must be coordinated with the Madlanga Commission, which is already in talks with him, raising questions about timing, access to statements and how to avoid duplication.

Mkhwanazi made damning claims earlier in 2025, accusing senior political figures of interference in policing operations and corruption.

The committee, led by chair Soviet Lekganyane, has appointed advocate Norman Arendse as evidence leader and is drawing up a witness list that could include ministers and senior police officials.

Lekganyane said the committee intends to work with the Mdlanga Commission and not against it.

“Before the end of this week, we should be able to announce the way forward. They expect us to cooperate with them, and we also need to get the cooperation of the witnesses.”

The panel has until 31 October to complete its work, a deadline that can only be changed by the speaker of Parliament.
