JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) is continuing with its special national executive committee (NEC) meeting at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on Sunday.
The party’s highest decision-making structure between conferences is meeting to assess the state of local government. A key focus of the gathering is to find solutions to widespread service delivery failures in municipalities countrywide.
Speaking to journalists, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the party remains concerned about the inefficiency of many municipalities.
"Communities feel let down, and they are concerned about corruption. They feel we are unresponsive and more concerned about internal issues. We are going to adopt an action plan on intervention and push back on all the challenges," he said.
The meeting will also prepare for Monday’s event in Johannesburg, where all ANC councillors from municipalities nationwide will gather for a roll call.
Mbalula said this will ensure the party’s representatives in local government remain aligned with the ANC’s mandate.
"The ANC has 4,853 ward and PR [Proportional Representation] councillors, all of whom will be in Johannesburg. Just before the 2021 local government elections, all ANC councillors met. We are the only party in the country that controls the biggest constituencies and wards in the country."
