Shimon Yehuda Hayut, better known as Simon Leviev, the man at the center of Netflix’s hit documentary The Tinder Swindler, has been detained in Georgia on an Interpol red notice.
Officials confirmed that the 34-year-old was taken into custody on Sunday, 14 September, after arriving at Batumi International Airport in the southwest of the country. However, the charges remain unknown.
"We're all waiting with bated breath to see what he's done now," says Friedman.
Hayut rose to international infamy in 2022 when the Netflix documentary revealed his global romance scam operation, making it the most-watched documentary in 90 countries. Posing as the wealthy heir to a diamond empire, Hayut reportedly conned multiple women he met on Tinder out of an estimated $10 million.
Victims, including Cecilie Fjellhøy, who said she gave him over $270,000, shared how he used lavish gifts and luxury travel to gain their trust before claiming he was in danger from “enemies” and needed large sums of money. After securing the funds, he would disappear.
Though Hayut has denied all allegations, claiming he is a “legitimate businessman” who made his money through bitcoin, his criminal past tells another story. In 2019, he was convicted on four fraud charges in a separate case, sentenced to 15 months in prison, but released after just five. He was also fined and ordered to pay thousands in compensation to his victims.
"Why anyone would believe anything he says when his face is plastered over the entire world is what I find quite strange... Why anyone would still fall for his cons is strange because he is a convicted swindler..."
