The South African Scholar Transporters Association has called on the government to enforce stricter regulations on the scholar transport sector.
The call comes after at least 20 learners were seriously injured in a minibus-taxi crash in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Monday morning.
The South African scholar transporters association's secretary general, Sihle Magubane, said their appeals to the government have fallen on deaf ears.
"We've been looking at this for all this time... From 2020, and we've been knocking on the door, saying to government, this has to stop because there are a lot of things that need to be done to better this scholar transport sector, but government doesn't want to listen to us."
Magubane said many of the drivers involved in the accidents are not properly licensed and trained.
"We try by all means to train our members... We try by all means... We can't do that on our own without being regulated because if we had been regulated government would have met us halfway."
The
government has indicated it will soon announce a collaboration with the vehicle testing association to further regulate the taxi and scholar transport industry.
