The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it’s ready to oppose if alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala appeals his bail judgment.

On Wednesday, the Alexandra High Court denied him bail, raising concerns over his alleged ownership of two passports and discrepancies in his records at the Department of Home Affairs.

According to the records, Matlala left for Eswatini in 2024, but there is no record of his return on the system.

The State also believes Matlala owns a bogus Eswatini passport with the name Vusimuzi Dlamini.

When Matlala was arrested in May for three attempted murder cases, including the hit on his socialite girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, he abandoned bail.

But earlier in September, he brought an application that was dismissed by the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The NPA’s Phindi Mjonondwane said they are not concerned with the prospect of him appealing this decision.

“As the NPA, we have indicated that we are ready to oppose such an application, should it be taken to a higher court. Of course, he will be exercising his rights by approaching the High Court.”

Mjonondwane said the State has a formidable team that will oppose Matlala’s release.
