Khayelitsha residents are calling on the government to respond to their demands for improved electricity supply in the area.

On Thursday, a group of about 120 people gathered outside Parliament in the Cape Town CBD.

The residents of the Kuyasa and New Monwabisi Park informal settlements said they have been without stable electricity supply for months.

They handed over a memorandum to a government official.

Government now has a week to respond to their demands.

Lonwabo Mqina, Ward 99 councillor, said if nothing happens after the seven days, they are willing to sleep in front of Parliament

“We've taken a stance that we're not going to ban our streets, vandalise our belongings. When we want something, we must actually go to where we're going to get responses and so I've taken this to the president.”

Mqina added that their electricity tripped regularly.

“We just hope that the president responds to our problems. It's the plight of the people. The people actually love the president, but I think it's his people that are giving a problem because if they don't respond to our challenges, then it will cause chaos in our communities.”
