Western Cape minister of police oversight and community safety, Anroux Marais, said that the prevalence of illegal firearms was contributing to a flare-up of gang-related shootings in the province.
Statistics show more than 800 people were shot dead in the Western Cape in the last year, among them, 300 children.
Marais on Monday commended the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies for their efforts to seize illegal firearms in the province.
Earlier on Monday, police confiscated six AK-47 rifles and eight nine-millimetre pistols with ammunition in Bellville.
Over the weekend, SAPS and law enforcement officers seized guns in Tafelsig, Beacon Valley and Hanover Park.
"These operational successes are a testament to the dedication, vigilance and bravery of our officers on the ground. Each illegal firearm taken off the streets is one less weapon that be used to harm or terrorise our communities."
