Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has commended the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies on their efforts to seize illegal firearms in the province.
Marais said the prevalence of illegal guns in the province is contributing to a flare-up of gang-related shootings, which have left more than 800 people dead in the last year, among them 300 children.

Police on Monday confiscated six AK-47 rifles and eight nine-millimetre pistols with ammunition in a flat in Bellville.
Over the weekend, SAPS and law enforcement officers seized four illegal guns in Tafelsig, Beacon Valley, and Hanover Park.
"These operational successes are a testament to the dedication, vigilance and bravery of our officers on the ground. Each illegal firearm taken off the streets is one less weapon that can be used to harm or terrorise our communities."
