The Wits Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Youth Command said it has aided more than 3,000 young people in Soweto with their university and funding applications as part of a province-wide campaign to help learners access higher education.

The initiative comes as many universities prepare to close their 2026 intake applications this week.

It builds on earlier efforts to address what they said is a lack of access to information and resources in disadvantaged areas.

Youth Command chairperson Thokozani Madonsela said the programme was designed to address structural barriers that often keep young people out of higher education.

"We understand that it is a very, very gruesome process and it requires a lot. It requires resources like your data, a laptop, and also money as well. So, what we are doing is that we are assisting those students, those young people in their application process, instead, so that we try and better negate the issue of young people in certain communities not being able to access institutions of higher learning."

Madonsela said the initiative reflects the Youth Command’s broader goal of bridging the gap between student politics and communities.

"From the statistics as we speak right now, we've done it with over 3,000 young people in the community of Soweto, in respective parts there to try and negate the issues that they face when they are trying to apply."
