WATCH | WRAP UP: Day 8 of Madlanga Commission

The wrap of Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo’s first day at the Madlanga Commission.

Testifying on Monday, Khumalo began naming individuals and outlining evidence said to be in the commission’s possession.

Among those mentioned was tenderpreneur and alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is accused of attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend. Matlala is currently before the courts facing several serious charges.

Khumalo listed five names, including North West businessman Brown Mogotsi, whom he claims received money from Matlala. While Khumalo did not confirm whether the funds were for political purposes, he suggested Mogotsi has been involved in funding the Police Minister and the ANC. However, he stopped short of directly linking Matlala to that funding.

Another key name raised was that of Maj-Gen Lesetja Senona and his son, Thato.

This is the first time Senona’s name has appeared in testimony, following earlier allegations by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Senona is alleged to have shared confidential information with Matlala, due to his son’ business ties with the alleged underworld figure.

Also mentioned was acting EMPD chief Julius Mkhwanazi. The Ekurhuleni Council is currently deliberating on whether to suspend him, following allegations both at the commission and in the media that he is closely associated with Matlala. It is alleged that Mkhwanazi fitted Matlala’s private vehicles with blue lights and registered several of Matlala’s private security vehicles under the Ekurhuleni Council and Metro.

Khumalo further named North West businessman Suleiman Kareem, who has featured before in previous allegations. While his exact role is still unclear, it is alleged Matlala leveraged Kareem’s influence with senior police officials and politicians to gain access to powerful circles.

Finally, private investigator Calvin Rafadi was named. Rafadi has previously acknowledged, in media reports, that he knows Matlala and has had dealings with him. However, the extent and nature of their relationship remain unclear.
