Security has been beefed up on the section of the N2 highway known as the "hell run" near the airport following recent violent attacks on motorists.

A couple came under attack in July when a concrete block struck a vehicle they were travelling in before Borchards Quarry near Nyanga.

A woman who was travelling with her husband from Somerset West to the Cape Town International Airport was injured in the attack.

The City of Cape Town has, from Thursday, deployed 44 new metro police, law enforcement, and traffic officers to enhance the safety of motorists and other road users.

The City of Cape Town said at least 500 incidents, including distressed motorists and knocked down pedestrians, are reported to its call center monthly.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the deployment of additional officers is a positive step for safety along this dangerous part of the N2 highway.

"For 2 or 3 years, our city has been working on this deployment because of the growing number of safety incidents along the N2, this stretch in particular, and because of the incidents around the airport approach and exit."

The officers are part of more than 700 new Metro Police officers deployed to work in each ward, focusing on community engagement and crime prevention.
