A man arrested for being in possession of an AK-47 will appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Police, acting on a tip-off, arrested the 61-year-old on Wednesday in Manenberg.

Over the past three months, nine AK-47s were found in communities in the metro.

Gun Free South Africa said that communities should unite and demand better safety for all.

The NPO's Stanley Maphosa said it was also important to remember that crimes could be reported without revealing one’s identity.

"Communities must come together and begin to declare certain spaces as gun-free zones. Schools, ECDs, churches, taverns, and restaurants must be gun-free zones."
