Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer among women in South Africa.

It is most common among post-menopausal women but can affect women of any age.

While those with a family history of breast cancer know to be vigilant, most cases are not hereditary, meaning everyone should pay attention and have regular tests regardless.

If breast cancer is detected early there is a 90% survival rate.

The best way to catch it early is to undergo regular screenings, says radiologist Dr Anne-Marie du Plessis.

“By the time we have felt a lump, there is already a small tumour.”

If the cancer develops to an advanced stage, the survival rate can drop as low as 25%.

“That is why routine screening, even when you feel fine, can save your life,” she continues.

She encourages all women to do regular self-exams, looking out for lumps, changes in size, skin dimpling or nipple changes.

Women over 40 should undergo a yearly mammogram.

In rare cases, men can also get breast cancer and should look out for lumps behind the nipple, discharge from their nipples or inversion of the nipple.
