Last month, 32-year-old Sthembiso Mdlalose lashed out at prosecutor Thami Mpekane as he questioned him on his testimony.

Mdlalose is currently on trial before the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court for allegedly starting the deadly fire that claimed 76 lives two years ago.

Sthembiso Mdlalose initially admitted to starting the fire at the sindiso building in the Joburg CBD, which led to his arrest.

However, once the trial began, he changed his tune, claiming he was coerced into taking the blame.

He later gave another version, saying he lied about starting the fire because he wanted to find shelter in prison.

When questioned about his inconsistent statements, Mdlalose abruptly left the courtroom and returned to the holding cells.

Mdlalose told the court today that he is remorseful.

"I want to apologise for disrespecting the house. I want to apologise for my behaviour and walking out of court. As I said, when you are fighting for your life, one undergoes an emotional journey."

Mdlalose will return to court next week.
