Milnerton High School's principal has assured parents that an incident of assault that took place at the school was actively being addressed.

A video of a group of learners assaulting another learner at the school has gone viral on social media platforms, sparking widespread outrage.

The video shows a group of learners from the school beating another learner with belts, a hose pipe and a large stick.

Two other learners were allegedly assaulted during the same incident.

Milnerton High School principal, Gert van Tonder, on Tuesday wrote to parents saying that disciplinary processes were set to follow this week.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed this, urging the public to refrain from distributing the video.

The SAPS has indicated that a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was being investigated and arrests could follow.

Family law expert, Bertus Preller, said that the learner who recorded the video could also be held accountable.

"From a legal point of view, I won't say they're complicit to it, but not doing anything from preventing a crime from happening, you actually can become complicit in such a situation."

The WCED has since appealed to the public to remove the video from social media platforms and report it as harmful content.
