A selection panel established to find a new city manager for Johannesburg has recommended the reappointment of Floyd Brink.

Out of ten shortlisted candidates interviewed for the role, Brink emerged as the panel’s top choice.

He has, however, been removed from the position twice in the past two years following court rulings that both his 2023 appointment and his subsequent reappointment were unlawful.

With the panel’s latest recommendation, Brink is expected to be reappointed as city manager for a third time on Thursday.

The Johannesburg city council is meeting on Thursday to debate and consider the selection panel’s recommendation to reappoint Floyd Brink as the city manager.

But the council is divided, with the African National Congress (ANC)-led coalition expected to support Brink’s return, while the Democratic Alliance (DA) and other opposition parties are firmly against it.

Some opposition parties argue that Brink is not the most suitable candidate for the role and allege that he is aligned with the ANC.

The selection panel has recommended that Brink be appointed on a fixed-term performance-based contract, effective 1 November.

Council members are set to vote on his selection panel’s recommendations in the afternoon.
