Newly elected Netball SA President Mami Diale: 'Time is a luxury we do not have'

Mami Diale was elected as the new Netball South Africa (NSA) President on Saturday, replacing Cecilia Molokwane.

Diale was the frontrunner, securing 69 votes out of 116 from the NSA Council members during their 2025 quadrennial meeting in Johannesburg.

She was elected over Nompumelelo Vavu of Buffalo City and Annelie Lucas representing Cape Winelands.

Of the 116 council members, 62 were present over the weekend, with representatives from the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) in attendance as observers.

Diale has a wealth of experience within the organisation, having served as vice-president since 2021 and acting president since April 2025.

Speaking on her election, Diale said, “Firstly, I would like to thank the Council Members for demonstrating such confidence in me and electing me as their new leader for the next five years. A big thank you also to all members who nominated me — this is no small feat, and I am truly honoured.”

She emphasised that the real work begins now.

“Now that the elections are concluded, the real work begins. I have full confidence that the new leadership of Netball South Africa is ready and capable to continue with the business of the day and the work that lies ahead.”

Diale closed with a strong call to action for the future of the sport.

“We cannot be oblivious to what has happened in the past; we now need to begin the work of restoration, rebuilding, and renewal. We must be intentional about doing the right thing, safeguarding our sport, and reclaiming its dignity. Time is a luxury we do not have — we need to hit the ground running.”
