The Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) has announced significant progress in restoring and validating instrument flight procedures across South Africa’s airport network.

The state entity said this was a result of enhanced coordination with the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and the implementation of a new design capacity aimed at improving operational safety and efficiency.

This includes the approval and operational readiness of the instrument approach procedure at Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport.

ATNS came under fire recently for a continued failure to address the suspension of instrument flight procedures, which are crucial for efficient airport access in all weather conditions.

Spokesperson Mphilo Dlamini said work was being done to enhance flight safety and reliability at one of the country’s busiest regional gateways.

"Another positive stride is on human capital strengthening, where ATNS has ramped up its recruitment of air traffic controllers, coupled with its initiatives to attract air traffic controllers and other critical skills globally. The ATNS board and executive committee remain committed in rebuilding and restoring confidence in South Africa's air traffic management system."
