Stress-free holiday snacks: MasterChef SA judge, Justine Drake’s must-have fridge fillers

What sort of fridge fillers should you have for the holidays?

MasterChef SA judge, TV presenter, food writer and editor Justine Drake says you want to cram the fridge full of things so that you aren't bothered. "You can actually have time on holiday and not have to make a 112 toasted sandwiches or whatever it is that one does."

She says fridge fillers make sure that kids, teenagers fend for themselves, there's something for them to make that's quick and there's something for visitors and people who pop in unexpectedly.

Drake says being prepared also means you won't be spending a fortune on store-bought stuff all the time.

"Things like canned beans, they make fantastic salads, they also make fantastic dips. They're cheap and cheerful. They last forever. You know a beans salad, whatever you put into it. Let's say you have a whole lot of different beans: butter beans and chickpeas and kidney beans and whatever. This just improves in the fridge...

"My kids usually take a spoon full of that and if they want something else they'll add some tuna or theyll add some tomato."

She says another thing that improves in the fridge is Asian or old fashioned pickled cabbage salad.

"Again add some tuna, add some feta... so you've got these kinds of basics that can be built on without you having to get out of your deck chair."

Drake says for the health conscious, remember to add protein to meals. "It's going to make you feel fuller longer... A roasted chicken, cut it up, put it in Tupperware.

You can make a toastie, you can just have a chicken salad, you can put it into yourleftover pasta salad.

"And don't eat gammon just for Christmas Day. In my house we eat gammon year round... because it makes brilliant sandwiches."
