ActionSA plans to table a motion in the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality demanding the city investigate safety compliance at the Homii building, where a seven-year-old boy died after plunging down a lift shaft.

A week ago, seven-year-old Aphelele Dlamini died, and his twin sister, Aphile, was critically injured after they fell down a lift shaft at their residential building in the Durban CBD.

Aphile remains in critical condition in hospital. ActionSA said it wants the municipality to take tangible action on the matter.

While the Dlamini twins’ parents await the outcomes of the final investigations and for the property management company, Homii, to release footage of the incident, ActionSA has weighed in, demanding intervention from the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) metro.

The party announced it would table a motion during the upcoming council sitting this week, requesting the city' investigative unit look into the building's safety. It is alleged that in 2023, another victim, Andiswa Montshongo, died in a similar incident in the same building.

ActionSA KZN Leader, Zwakele Mncwango, emphasised the need for accountability.

“We believe there needs to be transparency on what really happened here, and also those who are responsible for this property need to be held accountable, and those responsible for the safety of the buildings in eThekwini also be held accountable,” Mncwango said.

The party has also sent a letter of motivation to eThekwini Council Speaker Thabani Nyawose with the same plea for intervention.
