The African National Congress (ANC) has announced the return of Ebrahim Rasool to its top Western Cape structure, naming him the convenor of the newly formed Provincial Task Team (PTT).
This move is part of a push to reconfigure the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) following a poor electoral showing in last year’s general elections. The ANC only managed 19.5% of the Western Cape vote in the hotly contested polls.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula met with the PEC on Wednesday amid months of speculation about a possible dissolution of the top provincial structure.
Speaking at a media briefing in Cape Town, Mbalula said a reshuffle of the party’s Western Cape leadership is necessary to strengthen its renewal drive.
Mbalula clarified that the move does not constitute a dissolution of the PEC.
"The end goal is to strengthen the ANC in the Western Cape and that's what we are doing. So we have not taken a drastic decision to dissolve anyone, we've reconfigured the leadership."
Mbalula stated that talks are still ongoing with Rasool, who served as the ANC Western Cape chairperson in 1998 and is a former Ambassador to the US.
"This task is not a full-time position. He has requested us, among others, to look at his situation and he will revert back to us on his decision. But the decision of the ANC is that he will convene this particular team.”
