The South African Police Union (SAPU) has recorded 54 police deaths related to a decline in mental health.

SAPU said that this year's deaths were fewer compared to last year; however, they predict the number will rise as the financial year comes to a close.

According to the union, officers who use the psychological support services often face stigma.

It said that information shared by officers was often shared and was known by the rest of the station.

SAPU president, Mpho Kwinika, said if resources were available, officers should use them or search for them outside of SAPS services.

"We need to be proactive in and you will see that government is giving 5% currently towards mental health. The standard set by World Health Organization should be between 10% and 15%. They need to employ more resources in that field so that our members get the best out of that department."
