Did you know that brushing your teeth only cleans about 60% of tooth surfaces?
The remaining 40%, the space between your teeth, is where plaque build-up, gum disease and overall health risks sit.
GUM and Ivohealth have launched a ‘Small Habit, Big Impact’ campaign to bring awareness to the importance of cleaning between your teeth every day.
“The surfaces between your teeth are prime spots for plaque accumulation, because toothbrush bristles can’t always reach there,” says fitness and wellness expert Liezel van der Westhuizen.
Gum disease has been linked to over 50 conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory illness, and cognitive decline.
To clean between your teeth, it is recommended to use floss (traditional or water), interdental brushes, or soft and rubber picks.
“It is not about being perfect and getting your flossing done every day. It’s about starting that habit and getting it to stick,” she says.
