Johannesburg's municipal power utility, City Power, is currently grappling with a staggering debt of over R10 billion in unpaid electricity bills, a sum owed by residential and commercial customers.

This alarming figure was disclosed by Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero at City Power's Key Customers Forum held in Sandton on Thursday.

The utility has been consistently struggling to collect revenue from customers who have failed to honour their payments. Mayor Morero emphasised that the growing debt is seriously affecting the city's overall revenue collection.

"City Power is currently sitting at over R10.2 billion in electricity debt," he said.

"As City Power, we deeply value the relationship with key customers because they are partners in driving growth, job creation, and economic resilience."
