The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has criticised the African National Congress (ANC) for politicising the appointment of a City Manager.

Floyd Brink was re-appointed to the position on Thursday, despite controversy surrounding his previous tenure.

His appointment had initially been scheduled for last week, but was delayed due to internal divisions within the ANC.

Brink was removed from the position in December last year after the Gauteng High Court ruled that his appointment was irregular.

The ANC had been split over who to back for the position of Johannesburg City Manager.

One faction supported Brink’s reappointment, while another favoured former Johannesburg property company CEO Helen Botes.

The party finally found common ground and backed Brink for reappointment.

DA caucus leader Belinda Kayser Echeozonjoku said it was unfortunate that the appointment of a city manager became so highly politicised.

“We are not going to get involved in factional battles. This is an ANC internal factional battle between Dada Morero and Loyiso Masuku.”

The DA abstained from the vote.
